HBO Documentary Addiction (Links to an external site.) reflect on the following questions:

1. How would you feel if you learned a younger brother, sister, or cousin were abusing prescription or over-the-counter drugs?

2. Does the media and entertainment industry glamorize drug use in its portrayal of athletes, musicians, models, and actors who use drugs, and who may even have problems with addiction? How do you see the Tripartite relationship influencing our perceptions and policies on addiction?

3. What do the articles about gun violence (Links to an external site.), and Why are we still scared? (Links to an external site.) have to say about the connection between the media, mental health and public policy. Do you think our policies are adequate? What might you change? Would you strengthen current laws, add new ones? Do a little of your own research to see what experts recommend around these issues.

4. What connections do YOU see between these types of events and our ideas around mental health and violence? Think about (and look at) the coverage of things like: Virginia Tech, Newton, Charleston… how does the media coverage perhaps influence what society thinks should be done from a policy perspective?
