Social Identity Review
PURPOSE:
The goal of writing a review (opinion, evaluation) is to clearly identify and communicate
your position on a specific topic of your choosing. You must have a clear stance in the essayan
opinion!on the topic youve chosen, followed by clear support for your stance. How you
approach the topic is entirely up to you, but you want the reader to know fairly early on the
direction you are heading and why (many call this a thesis!).
PREPARATION:
1) Select an aspect of social identity or social commentary to evaluate. Your evaluation can be
based upon any of the following: a judgment about the topic (or a challenge to such a
judgment); a ranking or a comparison (or a challenge to such ranking or comparison); an
exploration of common criteria used in making the judgment. Your criteria can (and maybe
should) be closely tied to the reasons behind why you have chosen this topic.
2) Consider why this choice youve made to evaluate is important. What issues are at stake?
What value(s) do you want to presentand why? (Remember: issues need not be big; in
fact, oftentimes the smaller the issue, the more interesting it is.)
3) Determine who your readers are and what you want your readers to understand. What
strategies will you use to persuade and tackle its objections?
4) Examine the common assumptions or claims behind your choice. What are the key concepts
you plan to pursue? What evidence will you use to support your argument? What examples
will you use to show your readers your position?
5) Contemplate how you might organize your evaluation. What will you open your review with?
What criteria do you plan to cover and in what order? What do you want to leave your
readers considering by the essays end?
ASSIGNMENT:
Select a topic that interests you. It could be the Greek-Americans influence on the classic
American diner menu; the upper echelons of water bottle status in American high schools (Go
VSCO girls!); or Italian nonnas (aka Pasta Grannies) who impart their secrets for making fresh
pasta by hand (there had to be a food exampleor two!). Next, start planning your essay based
upon the criteria you will be using to evaluate your topic. Remember, you are evaluating your
topicforming a judgment of some sortrather than simply presenting a description of it.

separate from the review, following MLA guidelines in terms of format, page setup, etc.

GRADING RUBRIC FOR ESSAY #5:
Here are some guidelines you can follow to make sure your paper is doing what its
supposed to be doing. These are the things the professor is going to consider when
grading your paper, so they are the things you should think about, too.

The sophistication of your writing is linked to the sophistication of your thoughts,
not to the complex structure of your sentences. Most of your grammatical issues

2. Thesis:
The writer must develop a clear thesis that is easy for the reader to identify. The
more thoughtful, informed, speculative, intelligent, interested, engaged and
engaging your mind is, the better your paper is going to be. Ask yourself So
what? to make sure that you are pointing out things that are worth thinking
about. Think. Strive. Grapple with the material.
3. Evidence/Support:
The essay utilizes the required source(s) to clearly support main points. Use
effective examples, cite them correctly, embody them into the flow of the
sentence, and set them up with summary so that both the knowledgeable reader
and the novice can understand them. More than this, do something with your
examples. Make them work to illustrate a point. NOTE: For your final draft, your
grade will drop one full letter for each missing required source.
4. Organization/Logic:
The organization of ideas into paragraphs should demonstrate clear and logical
thinking, with smooth transitions to connect ideas. The writer should provide
appropriate closure (a conclusion!) to the essay. There should be evidence that
you did not write this paper in one draft the night before. The course is structured
to allow time for prewriting and drafting, but it is up to the student to take
advantage of this time.
5. MLA Formatting.
The essay utilizes standard MLA style for all in-text, parenthetical citations
contains a correctly formatted Works Cited page.

6. Length.
Though there is a minimum page length specified, the important point many
people miss is the purpose of establishing a length. If you write specifically,
concisely, articulately, thoughtfully, and with examples, you will weigh in about
right. Use the target length as your guide, but focus first on content.
